Là đội đầu tiên mở màn cho cuộc đua nổi tiếng Giro, đội Columbia-High Road bị áp lực nhiều nhất nhưng họ đã thi đấu hết sức mình. Và 5 thành viên của đội Columbia cán đích với số giờ là 21.50, vận tốc trung bình 56.33 km/h.

Tiếp theo là 2 đội Rabobank và Barloworld biết khó có thể thắng được Columbia, nhưng cũng hết sức giới hạn khoảng cách trong vòng 1 phút. Xuất phát thứ tư, và được đánh giá cao, có khả năng thắng chặng này, nhưng đội Garmin-Slipstream, đội đã thắng chặng tính giớ đầu tiên năm ngoái phải ngậm ngùi khi không thể lập lại lịch sử. Đội Garmin đành lép vế thua Columbia vỏn vẹn 6 giây.

Xuất phát sau cùng, đội Astana (sắp bị dẹp tiệm) chiếm vị trí thứ 3, về sau Columbia 13 giây.
