We are a group of Vietnamese and Australian (4 or 5 in 40s and 50s) , who is THINKING about 2-3weeks cycle exploration of Vietnam, from Saigon and ends in Hanoi in November or October 2011 (Saigon-Hue and NinhBinh-Hanoi about 1200kms - possible skipping Hue to Thanh-Hoa)
- mainly highway 1A or secondary roads along coastline (Saigon-Hue and NinhBinh-Hanoi about 1200kms - Hue to NinhBinh is optional)
- average 100kms/day and 1 rest-day/ 2-3 cycle days.
We know how crazy traffic in Vietnam, and safety is our most concerned
We will need a support van - this van will follow and support us (20-30kms/hour), BUT this means we will obstruct the traffic.
Will this cause any problem with local authorities/traffic police ? - Do we need a permit or something ?
(we are just a group of armature cyclists, who try to explore Vietnam by cycling)
Thanks for any tips of cycling in Vietnam.
Swanson
Another member from Australia, good on you Swanson.
I suggest you chat with nick Phuoccantho, he is originally from Can Tho now lives in Sydney, he travels back and forth from OZ and Vietnam so he has fairly good knowledge of road conditions in Vietnam.
Please specify some information below so that we can work out the plan for your trip:
1. How many people are there in your group?
2. Will all do the cycle from hotel to hotel?
3. Will you do the cycle on the Highway and National Road only?
I agree with Mr Long and I believe that it's possible to make it as I have done quite a few biking trips in Vietnam. Due to busy traffic, we, cyclists ride on secondary roads along coastline or via new Ho Chi Minh trail. In case of busy traffic on Highway (Highway 1-not recommended to ride on certain sections of this Highway) cyclists should be transferred to quite road by van or bus. It's depending on number of cyclists in the party, you might need to have a small truck for bikes and a van for cyclists. So, these vehicles will act as back and front marker and drivers will help you do domestic- supplying water, preparing snacks..........! Be sure that every one is in between the vehicles of all time and to regroup in every 15-30 km(depending on terrain) for refreshment, snacks ! Please take few more advices from other members and combine them for a better trip! All the best!
Guys, Thanks for your inputs
- yes, you are right we are thinking of Saigon-Hanoi along coastline (Saigon-Hue and NinhBinh-Hanoi about 1200kms - skipping Hue to NinhBinh)
- a support/backup van + motorcycles - this is a good idea
yes, we are just a group of armature cyclists: we've tried 100kms /day for a whole week without a problem, and we still doing bush walking, back-packing, trekking (Nepal)...
